I always wanted to be a vet but when I did not get the grades to study veterinary medicine at university I became interested in biological research. I became more interested when I spent a year at the Institute of Zoology at London Zoo – where I experience the research they undertake for animal conservation and disease. Since then I have become interested in genetics when I learnt about how viral DNA can be integrated into a host species DNA.

I was studying environmental economics during the first year of my bachelor, and I become more interested in biology after taking a summer practical course in life science college. I changed my major and continued my study in biomedical research in cancer genetics and now genetics in infectious disease throughout my master, PhD and postdoc trainings.

I wanted to be a doctor. In school, I was good in practicals more than theory and could easily relate what I was studying to reality
