I love how varied it is – this week, everyday is different and my tasks include going to the labs to extract DNA from extreme metal-tolerant microbes, writing a paper on a Canadian salt lake, meeting with my students and getting to take part in this :D. Fundamentally, I get paid to learn, which I love.

I love how exciting it is when I finally get a bit of code to do what I want. This can sometimes involve 100s or 1000s of lines of code over the course of several weeks, so when it works, it’s really satisfying!

I love the variety and I love seeing how different every scientist’s work and questions can be. I might study the best way to kill cancer, why certain chemicals are dangerous in the water supply, or how a Tyrannosaurus rex caught and ate its prey. There’s so much to do in science that I never get bored – and I love being one of the first people to know something brand-new and help share it with the world.

I really like that is it flexible and varied. It is not a typical 9-5 role. Some periods are very busy and hectic, other times are less so. Whilst I do have to attend many meetings, I can also pursue my own interests somewhat and attend conferences/events I am really interested in.
I like that I can do research, stay up to date with the literature, engage with scientific writing and contribute to the development of new course materials and/or assist others in delivering sound and engaging study materials. A lot of the reading and writing can be done from anywhere, as long as you have a functional computer and access to the internet. -

Helping my students and post-doc interpret their results and working out how new findings fit in with what we already know.

I love putting together the pieces of information to make scenarios that could explain what is happening biologically. It’s like solving a riddle or making a puzzle, where you have to really think a few possible solutions and select the ones that make most sense!

My job has two parts – I teach students and I study for my PhD. I really like both but if I had to pick, it would be studying for my PhD. I love research and there are so many parts to it, so no two days are the same. I love seeing the progress, even though sometimes it feels like you’re not making progress at all!

Finding out something new and communicating it to other people. Explaining to people what I do more so people not involved in Science and they are able to understand it.

My favourite part of my job is being able to look down a microscope and see the DNA of people who aren’t even born yet! It’s also such a privilege for me that for the samples I analyse, for a very small amount of time, I am the only person in the world to know the outcome.
