Initially when a sample would have been taken it can be from a dead frog or it could be blood where the animal is still alive. The samples which I am using however are from frogs/toads which are already dead. Otherwise, I use data online which other scientists have already taken from frogs.
Not necessarily. Taking small samples from a frog’s toe or skin is a common and less invasive method. It’s usually done by clipping a tiny piece of tissue for DNA extraction. This method is particularly useful in studying wild frogs where you want to minimize harm.
Or, swabbing the inside of a frog’s mouth or the surface of its skin with a special swab can collect DNA. This is a non-invasive method and can be useful for studying frogs in their natural habitat. Frog don’t need to travel to our labs for DNA extraction 🙂
