Animals have different number of chromosome pairs – we humans for example have 23 pairs. Individuals with down syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21, which is why we also call this Trisomy 21. There have been cases of other animals having an extra copy of a chromosome, but the symptoms or are not necessarily the same as in humans.
